“Five kilometers too long”: voigt misses stage win

Jens voigt attempted one more of those famous solo rides on his last bavarian tour – in the end unsuccessfully. Despite a great show of strength, the cyclist from berlin narrowly missed out on the hoped-for stage win in the third stage of the funf-day race.

After more than five hours in the lead, the 42-year-old was caught up shortly before the finish in neusab near augsburg on friday and had to leave the victory to daryl impey. The sudafrican from team orica-greenedge came out on top after a total of 232.7 kilometers, ahead of compatriot reinardt janse van rensburg (giant-shimano) and russian alexander porsew (katusha).

"I worked 230 kilometers, but unfortunately the route was five kilometers too long for me," said voigt. "I thought if i was number one here, i could drive like number one."The fact that in the end it was not enough for a place on the podium was shrugged off by the veteran. "Despite everything, it was a good day for me. I could show myself in front once again, the old story: me against everyone, me against the field – the classic, so to speak."

The three-time winner of the bavarian tour had chosen the longest stage for his attack and had already broken away about 15 kilometers after the start in grassau. Together with three other riders, the rider from the trek racing team was able to break away from the peloton, and a good 25 kilometers before the finish, he was the last to shake off tino thomel from team stuttgart – in the end, voigt didn’t need much to score a coup.

Best german was finally the only 19 years old phil bauhaus from team stolting in fourth place. The overall lead was defended by swiss mathias frank (IAM cycling).

Probably the decisive stage in the battle for overall victory in the 35. Bavarian round of bavaria is scheduled for saturday at the 25.5-kilometer individual time trial in wassertrudingen. Top favorite to succeed in the fight against the clock is fabian cancellara from voigt’s trek team.
